In the last couple of months the world has been mesmerized by the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The accident occurred in the deepwater horizon platform owned by BP, which led to oil leaking into the Gulf for 3 months unchecked. The damage caused to the environment, the local economy and to BP will take years if not decades to recover from. 

What happened? Where did BP go wrong?

This kind of tragedy is not unique to BP but it revealed a major flaw in BP’s operational processes; BP failed to show that they had effective systems in place to deal with a crisis.  If BP had taken a stock of what happened to Exxon on March 24, 1989 when Exxon Valdez ran aground in Alaska Prince William Sound, they would have been better equipped to deal with the issues. History is a solid prophet of the future!

From the BP experience ,we can see that successful companies are not the ones without a record of disasters but those that can prove they are adequately prepared to deal with any emergency. Preparing for crisis should become top of the mind concern for organizations.  Companies must stop adopting “it cannot happen to us” approach because crisis is inevitable and no one can say when it would occur. They should instead put in place a strategic plan that could adequately deal with possible/envisaged disasters. The strategy to deal with such events should be subjected to review periodically.  Sounds like a luxury doesnt it ? but it is not !!! A  well structured crisis management plan showing the arrangement management has put in place and measures taken to solve problems when  crisis hits an organization is essential for the continuity of that usiness.

The most challenging part of crisis management today is the social media. When something does go viral on the web, it is overwhelming and scary to see how fast it spreads. Because the crowd controls the conversation, You tube, Facebook, Myspace and Twitter and not the conventional media have become the biggest threat to organizations.  While they are excellent marketing tool and are being used by organizations to promote their goods and services, they have been discovered to be effective tool in the hands of competitors when crisis eventually erupts.  Companies that are looking to exist in the long term need to pay attention to social media mentions of their brands, services and even their top management. This should be done regularly; in order to respond to any negative circumstances should it arise. It is an organization’s responsibility to turn negative comments (if any) around and defend them as soon as possible. It is the silence and non action that in most cases, result to embarrassment and possible litigation for organizations (remember the United Airlines case?).  If there is no response on Twitter or Facebook one hour after a story breaks, it shows clearly that an organisation is not adequately prepared to deal with social media crises. Unfortunately very few companies are yet to identify their communications on the social media.

In preparing a crisis management plan,the guidelines must be taken.

Take a look at  the crisis whether large or small that has affected the organization in the last ten years.
Take into consideration what can happen to a company at any point in time. Things such as workplace violence, terrorism, kidnapping, fire, HR issues, IT failure, internal fraud, death of staff etc. 
Play the “what if” game and constitute problems that could happen.
 Assign responsibilities to staff so every body knows who is responsible for dealing with such issues.
Test and re test the crisis management plan.
 Finally don’t forget to recruit an online crisis manager!

Gulf Seafood Safe to Eat After Oil Spill

Almost 8 months after the BP/ Deepwater Horizon oil spill started the FDA along with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have released many reports stating that Gulf seafood is safe to eat. With rounds and rounds of testing complete the two agencies have found no significant amounts of harmful chemicals in fish or the waters of the Gulf affected by the oil spill. Even with all the research that has been performed some people are still hesitant about eating seafood caught in the Gulf. The people that are afraid to eat Gulf seafood are doing more harm than they realize.

 

When people refuse to eat Gulf seafood because they feel that it is unsafe they are hurting the fishermen of the Gulf. Gulf fishermen have already faced great difficulties and this is just furthering the condition. The oil spill closed down a large percentage of fishing grounds in the Gulf destroying the way of life of the local fishing industries. Currently only 4% of the Gulf is still closed to fishing and that area is primarily restricted to the oil rigs surroundings. With a majority of the waters open fishermen should expect things to start and turn around.

I don’t see why people aren’t eating Gulf seafood? I do and it hasn’t hurt me (or anyone else). The FDA and NOAA both said that the food was safe to eat and these over cautious people are just causing other people to suffer. No reported incidents of human injury have occurred from people consuming Gulf seafood after the spill so why not go ahead and eat it. With lots of support for the wildlife of the region under way I feel that we need to do more for the people affected by the spill. BP has provided 100 million dollars for the out of work in the Gulf so now it’s time for use to do our part.

 

Most of us have donated money to the oil spill recovery cause in one way or another but more can still be done. Instead of writing a check to oil spill recovery funds go out and buy some Gulf caught seafood. Not only will you be supporting the Gulf communities that have been severally hurt by the oil spill but you’ll also be providing food for your families that both the FDA and NOAA have recently spend a lot of time analysis for safety. It seems to me that Gulf seafood might be safer now than it has been ever before.

The well that gushed an estimated 185 million gallons of oil has been declared killed as of September, but the effects of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill are far from over. And, if you’re the sort of person who likes to be involved in controversy, or likes to raise eyebrows or attract notice, then the most controversial costume you could wear this year would be an oil spill costume.

There are two ways to go about getting an oil spill costume: buy one premade, or make one yourself. If you have the money and don’t feel like making one yourself, premade costumes are great. There’s a popular costume out there now, called the Bad Planning BP Costume. It’s a set of green coveralls, covered in splatters of oil, with a Bad Planning logo emulating the BP logo. Pair it with a wrench or a plastic fish, either covered in ‘oil’ and a set of work boots, and you’ll be set up in no time.

Making your own costume can be a great affordable way to dress up this year. Just be prepared for whatever clothing you wear to be ruined. If you’re not willing to do that to your own clothes, hit up a second hand store. While you’re there, purchase a t shirt or sweatshirt and jeans. If you can get your hands on a cheap hard hat,safety vest, and work gloves, even better.

The ‘oil’ if your oil spill costume is the biggest hurdle. Real oil is, well, oily, and you don’t want it all over your clothes, soaking into your skin. Plus, imagine sitting down covered in oil, on someone’s sofa. I don’t imagine they’d be too pleased. So, you need an oil alternative to splatter on your clothes. There are a couple options that you can use in place of actual oil: Paint, and liquid latex.

Paint is a simple, accessible option for oil stains. Find a black paint that will dry shiny, thin it down a bit, and using a paintbrush, squeeze bottle, or by simply pouring it on your clothing. Using a brush, or even a stick or straw dipped in paint, you can shake it over the clothing, getting the drips and splatters associated with liquids splashing all over. Some paint can be applied to the skin, although I would never advise putting it on your face or in your hair. Read the label of whatever paint you purchase thoroughly to make sure it’s safe for skin contact.

Liquid latex is another option for splatters. If you’re allergic to latex, skip this option and stick with paint. Liquid latex has the advantage of drying shiny, and being able to be applied to skin and hair without side affects. Near Halloween it’s easier to get ahold of it because many people like to use it to paint faces and bodies. The rest of the year you might need to purchase it online, at a theatrical or year round costume shop, or at an adult store. You can apply it to your clothes the same way you would the paint above, you just don’t need to water it down first.

Has the Oil Spill Problem Solved by BP?

The Deepwater Horizon oil rig, which was leased by the British Petroleum (BP), experienced a massive explosion and caused uncontrolled oil spill to the Gulf of Mexico on 20th April 2010. Being the responsible party of this unfortunate incident, BP has started taking a series of actions to fix the problems.

For the past six months, BP has established a few claim offices in some states. The purpose of setting up these offices is to assist the victims who are suffering from losses of income and damage of properties to regain financial strength. Now, there is a main concern here. Has BP solved the oil spill problem completely? Has everyone involved been compensated accordingly?

In my personal opinion, this incident is considered very serious and there are many unforeseen circumstances and consequences which BP has to handle slowly. Many issues can’t be settled within a short period of time. BP has taken immediate actions to overcome the problems, i.e. they have successfully stopped the crude oil from spilling into the ocean and they have cleaned up the water. However, this is not the end of the story. I would say BP is still in the midst of settling the issues. There are many side effects which we can only see right now.

The tourism industry is affected most by this oil spill incident. Many people are not willing to come to Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and other coasts for holidays. They don’t want to spend their money to come to these tourist spots which they find “unsafe”. In their point of view, they don’t dare to swim because there might be oil in the water and on the beaches. Furthermore, the tourists refuse to dine in the restaurants too. There is only one question in their mind: “Why should I place myself at risk?” As a result, the business owners are suffering from huge losses and they don’t know when the situation will be improved. BP has stated that the business owners can submit their claims on this matter as long as they can provide proof. However, how can these F&B owners prove their losses? It is impossible for them to get the clients to write in to inform that they feel unsafe to dine in the particular restaurants.

For those employees who have been retrenched by the tourist agents and restaurants, they are not allowed to claim from BP. They might be retrenched 3 months after the incident because the business owners wanted to cut down operating costs. These unfortunate employees are suffering from loss of income but they can’t obtain financial assistance from any party.

Although hard effort has been taken by BP to solve the problems, not everyone can be taken care of. It is for sure that people living in the Gulf of Mexico will only be able to regain financial strengths after few years. They need to have great patience and determination to continue with their life.
